The Artwiz fonts

These fonts were not made by me. An artist going by the nickname of Artwiz released them into the wild under a license he made up, called the ZBL (Ziwtra Boogie License), which basicly allowed complete freedom of usage (modification, whatever) without the need for credits or anything. It was a very generous gesture.

I am hosting them here along with some related information, because back when I was also looking for them they proved quite dificult to find. I hope other people will find them easily if they have a stable home.

1. The original Artwiz fonts

Many artwork projects use the fonts created by Artwiz. He seems to be out of touch with the community and his site is down, so you can get them right here:

Artwiz fonts
Downloaded 2611 times. Size: 22.0 Kbytes.

These fonts are “bitmap” fonts. Unlike “regular” fonts which are described by mathematical shapes and can thus be resized, these offer simple one-to-one correspondence between characters and their graphical representation as a small image. Therefore you can’t change slant, size, face, character set or anything else. What you see is what you get, period.

2. The upgraded Artwiz fonts

Alec Zapka has taken upon himself to maintain and constantly improve the Artwiz fonts in order to make them compatible with FontConfig. This means increased compatibility with all the modern desktop environments, such as KDE 3.x+ (QT 3.x+) and Gnome 2.x+ (GTK+ 2.x+). Utilities such as mkfontdir are also able to recognize and use these improved fonts.

Basically, this means that you’ll finally be able to use the Artwiz fonts in all your graphical applications. Get the upgraded fonts here.
